Acid Reflux Symptoms

Following are common acid reflux symptoms:


  • Heartburn: This is the most common symptom of acid reflux. Burning sensations start from stomach and move up through food tube to chest and throat. Usually such burning starts after meals or during nights. Burning severity causes irritation and sleeplessness. Such burning sensations increases when patient bends down or lift any weight. If patient smokes these burning sensations become more severe and cause unbearable pain in chest.


  • Reflux or Regurgitation: Due to improper closure of sphincter muscles, patient feels as if stomach content is being thrown back in the food tube. This also causes feeling like vomiting and extreme burning in food tube.


  • Dyspepsia: Acid reflux patients feel utter discomfort and pain in upper abdomen. Patients feel nausea and full stomach after every meal.


  • Dysphagia or difficulty in Swallowing: Patient swallows solid food with difficulty and finds difficulty in drinking too.


  • Persistent Coughing: Due to heartburn and regurgitation patient coughs continuously. This dry coughing is very distressing and causes irritation especially during nights when patient is sleepy.


  • Halitosis or Bad Breath: Reflux of food back up in esophagus also causes bad breath along with other problems. Patient has to use mouth fresheners and mouth washers regularly to avoid bad breath which aggravates the acid reflux distress.


  • Choking sensation: Due to difficulty in swallowing and feelings of food being pushed back from stomach patient feel choking in food tube which causes restlessness.


  • Acid laryngitis: A lump is felt in throat and patient need to repeatedly clear throat. Hoarseness and dry cough are accompanied with lump.


  • Chronic Nausea and Vomiting: In some cases vomiting is also reported along with persistent nausea. But it should be noted that these symptoms may be due to some other problem also apart from acid reflux.


  • Insomnia: Due to heartburning and coughing patients cannot sleep during nights. Lack of peaceful sleep causes all problems arising due to sleeplessness. Patient remains dull through out day and so cannot perform his work properly.
